Japan - Spring 2024

Japan is a photographers dreamland. The Tokyo azalea gardens, red Tori gates and brightly colored temples are gorgeous. Kyoto is home to the amazing Otaji Nenbutsu temple with its 100's of carved heads covered in moss, the Saihoui Temple with its famed moss gardens are sublime and the Imperial Palace grounds are beautiful. Nara boasts its deer population and the huge Buddha in the Kasuga Taisha Grand Shrine is impressive. The Naoshima Art Island with its many exhibits is unique as is the mist in the Inland Sea. Kurashiki is the "Venice of Japan" with its lovely canal. Miyajima Island south of Hiroshima has sweet little buddhas with red knit caps guiding you to the old temple with gold buddhas and sand mandalas. Inuyama is home to the historic Urakuen Garden and castle high on a hill. A side trip to Meiji-Mura village features the reconstructed Imperial Hotel facade built by Frank Lloyd Wright. Traveling by bullet train is the best mode of transportation in Japan.

Enjoying the magnificent gray whales in Magdalena Bay off the Pacific Ocean in Baja Sur was a most memorable week with National Geographic/Lindblad. We were on a small expedition boat, the Sea Lion and used zodiacs and pankas to view the whales "spy hopping" and surfing waves. We also enjoyed the bottlenose dolphins, many species of birds, oyster harvesting, hiking and beaches.

Colombia Panama Aboard the Sea Quest 2022

November saw us aboard the Lindblad ship the Sea Quest with National Geographic guides exploring the islands and inland villages of Colombia and Panama. The trip began in the beautiful old city of Cartagena, CO and ended by going through the Panama Canal to Panama City. We visited Isolate, a densely populated small island, went into the interior to a village that makes gorgeous Panama hats and woven palm products, snorkeled in warm waters, hiked in mud and saw a multitude of wildlife. The lock system of the Panama Canal is truly an engineering marvel and going through at night was magical.

Yankee Fork, Idaho-July 2021

North of Stanley in the central Idaho mountains, a fork of the Salmon River has a colorful history. The town of Custer is a ghost town now with many artifacts on the ground and in the old cabins of a once thriving town of gold miners. The miners were working the Dredge as it worked its way up the Yankee Fork sifting for gold nuggets. The area is now an historical site.

The Palouse - June 2021

An area in the southeast corner of the state of Washington is a unique agricultural area known as the Palouse. Hundreds of acres of the canola plant bloom a bright yellow in early June in the rolling hills interspersed with green chick pea fields and other crops. Amazingly, these fields have no overhead watering. The water table is only 8 feet down and the fields stay all shades of green and bright yellow during early summer. The dazzling yellow is contrasted with bright blue skies, farms and red barns.

The coastal beaches are also beautiful, especially Beach One and Ruby Beach with its rock formations and tide pools.
